Restore the strength, function, and appearance of your tooth with a custom dental crown. At Springfield Dental, we create natural-looking crowns that blend seamlessly with your smile.
What Are Dental Crowns?
Dental crowns are custom-made caps that cover and protect a damaged, weakened, or heavily filled tooth. They restore the tooth’s shape, size, strength, and appearance while blending in with your natural smile. Crowns are often recommended after large fillings, root canal treatments, or when a tooth is cracked, ensuring long-lasting protection and function.
Types of Dental Crowns
Dental crowns can be made from different materials, each offering its own advantages in terms of strength, appearance, and cost. The right choice depends on your dental needs, smile goals, and budget.
Porcelain Crowns
Porcelain crowns are highly aesthetic and designed to closely match the colour of natural teeth. They are a popular choice for front teeth because of their lifelike appearance.
Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal (PFM) Crowns
These crowns have a metal base covered with porcelain, combining durability with a natural look. While strong, the metal underneath can sometimes show as a thin dark line near the gum over time.
Zirconia Crowns
Zirconia crowns are very strong and resistant to wear, making them ideal for both front and back teeth. They also offer a natural appearance and are less likely to chip than porcelain.
Metal Crowns
Made from alloys like gold or other metals, these crowns are extremely durable and long-lasting. Although they don’t blend in aesthetically, they are often used for molars where strength matters most.
Composite Resin Crowns
Composite resin crowns are a more affordable option but are less durable and more prone to staining and wear compared to porcelain or zirconia. They are typically used as a short- to medium-term solution.

We Are Preferred Providers For:
How Is a Dental Crown Procedure Performed?
Initial Examination and Preparation
Your dentist examines the tooth and takes X-rays to check its roots and surrounding bone. If the tooth is severely decayed or damaged, additional treatment (such as a root canal) may be needed before the crown is placed.
Tooth Reshaping
A small amount of enamel is carefully removed from the tooth’s surface to make room for the crown. This ensures a secure and natural fit.
Impressions Taken
An impression or digital scan of your tooth is made and sent to a dental lab, where your custom crown is crafted to match the shape, size, and colour of your natural teeth.
Temporary Crown Placement
A temporary crown is placed to protect the prepared tooth while your permanent crown is being made. This also allows you to eat and speak normally in the meantime.
Final Crown Placement
At your second visit, your dentist checks the fit and appearance of the permanent crown before cementing it securely in place. Final adjustments are made so your bite feels natural and comfortable.
